The teachers gave me a  tour and heads up on some of the things that need repairing.

Well to begin with, we want to start with repairs to the plumbing. There are two real toilets installed but don’t work for lack of basic pipe fittings, valves and taps.

The children are currently using a “casa de pong-pong” outhouse.

Rather  dangerous for the young pre-schoolers since there is a two foot square opening in the ground, that a child would not want to fall into.

Anyway, first things first is to get started on the wash rooms. Local Nicaraguan schools have zero or next to zero budgets to draw from even for the smallest repairs. So you can imagine how pleased the school is for your kindred contributions.

Secondly, the teacher asked if we had enough funds for classroom doors before hurricane season. Right now they have old re-bar gates which works for locking up the school at the end of the day, but doesn’t keep the wind and rain out. Hurricane season is 3 months away, so there is plenty of time to do the doors.

We’ll get a quote from a local wood-worker as to how much it would cost to have them made and installed.

Semana Santa  (Easter spring break) in Central America is in full swing.

School is now out until next Monday or April 13th, so I figure now is a good time to get some work done on this escuela while the pupils are on vacation.  I would like to see as much done now because after this coming weekend, I’m helping a friend sail his boat to Panama.

I’ll be packing my laptop, so count on updates from port to port.
